My wife and I heard the following fantastic poem by Rudyard Kipling
on the radio the other morning. We had never heard it before but we
wanted to share it as I am sure it will strike a cord with any dog
owner/lover. It's called "The Power of the Dog"

There is sorrow enough in the natural way
From men and women to fill our day;
And when we are certain of sorrow in store,
Why do we always arrange for more?
Brothers and sisters, I bid you beware
Of giving your heart to a dog to tear.

Buy a pup and your money will buy
Love unflinching that cannot lie--
Perfect passsion and worship fed
By a kick in the ribs or a pat on the head.
Nevertheless it is hardly fair
To risk your heart to a dog to tear.

When the fourteen years which Nature permits
Are closing in asthma, or tumour, or fits,
And the vet's unspoken prescription runs
To lethal chambers or loaded guns,
Then you will find--it's your own affair--
But ... you've given your heart to a dog to tear.

When the body that lived at your single will,
With its whimper of welcome, is stilled (how still!)
When the spirit that answered your every mood
Is gone--wherever it goes--for good,
You will discover how much you care,
And will give your heart to a dog to tear.

We've sorrow enough in the natural way,
When it comes to burying Christian clay.
Our loves are not given, but only lent,
At compound interest of cent per cent.
Though it is not always the case, I believe,
That the longer we've kept 'em, the more do we grieve:
For, when debts are payable, right or wrong,
A short-term loan is as bad as a long--
So why in--Heaven (before we are there)
Should we give our hearts to a dog to tear?
Summer is here and it's a great time to be outdoors - enjoying the
sunshine and warmth, but it's also the time that our pets are most at
risk of overheating and heat stroke.

Helping your pet to keep cool this summer is vital, but with these few simple tips it won't take any effort at all.

Have your pet clipped.
Daily grooming to remove unwanted hair will make your pet more comfortable and will help it to shed excess heat. Grooming aids such as Slicker brushes and Zoom Grooms are designed to strip loose hair from your pet's coat and are very useful.

Provide adequate shade and water.
Make sure your pets have adequate shade to rest in at this time of year and have plenty of fresh water in the shade so that it remains cool. Dogs can only sweat through the pads of their feet and by panting. Evaporation from the wet surfaces of their mouth and nose helps lower body temperature.

Put ice in their water bowl
Freeze a cup or two of water and place them in your pet's water bowl in the morning to keep their water cool.

Exercise in the shade.
Walk your dog in the cooler times of day, either early morning or late evening. Stop regularly to give your dog a rest and a drink, or even better a cooling swim.

Walk on the grass.
Asphalt gets very hot and can burn your pet's paws. Avoid walking on hot roads and sidewalks and instead opt for a walk in a park or on the grass if possible.

Don't leave your pets in the car.
Never leave your pet unattended in a hot car. Many say "I'm only going into the shop for a pint of milk - I'll be just a minute". The 'just a minute' extends very quickly if the shop is busy or if you happen to meet a talkative friend. On a 70F day, the car temperature can rise above 130F in only minutes. The highest temperatures are reached in dark-colored cars with large glass areas.

Apply sunscreen.
Pets can get sunburned too! Your pet may require sunscreen on his or her nose and ear tips. Pets with light-colored noses or light-colored fur on their ears are particularly vulnerable to sunburn and skin cancer.

Prepare for the beach.
Take care when taking your dog to the beach. Ensure that your pet can find shade or bring a beach umbrella or shade structure. Always remember to take fresh water along as drinking salt water can dehydrate your dog.

Take extra care for higher risk pets.
Short nosed breeds of dogs, such as Bull Dogs, Pugs and the Pekingese, are very susceptible to heat stress, as are overweight or thick-coated pets. Dogs or cats with poor circulation, very old animals and dogs with any respiratory disease are also at higher risk, so extra care should be taken.

Heat stress is a major concern over summer but a little common sense is all that is required to help your pets keep their cool and stay healthy!

What do I do if my pet does get heat stroke?

Heat stroke causes incredibly severe damage. Affected animals first appear excited, but then appear to lose their balance. Seizures can occur and this can lead to them slipping into a coma. Multi-organ failure can then follow and the animal will be at grave risk.

If this happens, then emergency first aid is vital and you will need to get them to a vet quickly. While you are contacting your vet, try to cool your pet by placing it in a room temperature (not iced) water bath or by hosing it. Then place your wet animal in front of the fan and apply ice packs to its head.

Your veterinarian will need to give medication to control seizures and to prevent further damage to your pet's organs. They may also give it a water enema to reduce the body temperature. It is likely that your pet will be placed on an intravenous drip and your vet may also anesthetize your pet to prevent seizures.

As always, it is better to prepare your pets for the hotter weather and prevent them from getting heat stroke than to have to treat them for it later, however with early detection and professional treatment you can ensure that they will be back on their feet and are happy and healthy in no time.

So from everyone at VetShopOnline, we wish both you and your pets a fun and safe summer!

It's tick season in many parts of the United States (Spring to early fall) and therefore it's the time we receive the most questions about a worrisome bacterial infection called Lyme disease.

Most of the questions we receive are from dog owners, but Lyme disease can also effect other species including cats and people.

How is Lyme Disease Spread?

Lyme disease is caused by the Borrelia Burgdorferi bacteria and in the USA it's spread by the deer tick (also known as the blacklegged tick) and a small group of other ticks closely related to the deer tick. Ticks become infected with the bacteria when they suck blood from infected small mammals such as mice and an infected tick may spread the bacteria when it bites your dog.

Dogs that spend a lot of time outdoors, especially in the woods or bushland run the highest risk of becoming infected with Lyme disease but ticks can be carried into yards on other animals, and so dogs are at risk anywhere ticks might be found.

Lyme disease is seen right across the USA but is most common along the Pacific Coast, North Eastern USA, and in the Midwest so if you're in any of those areas, please take particular care.

Its important to be aware that infected animals won't necessarily display the symptoms of Lyme disease.

How do I know if my dog has Lyme Disease?

Only your veterinarian can make a proper diagnosis of Lyme disease, but symptoms of Lyme disease can include:

lameness

lethargy

swollen lymph nodes

fever

decreased appetite

swollen, painful joints

depression

vomiting

loss of appetite, and increased thirst and urination

If you suspect your dog is exhibiting any of these symptoms, consult your veterinarian as soon as possible.

Lyme disease can cause kidney disease in dogs, which is serious, although symptoms such as behavioral changes, seizures and heart complications, which are sometimes seen in humans with the disease, are uncommon in dogs with Lyme disease.

How is Lyme Disease in Dogs Treated?

Your veterinarian will advise you what to do if you're dog is believed to have Lyme disease. Vets treat dogs with Lyme disease with a course of antibiotics which will usually produces a rapid improvement in symptoms.

If your dog is identified as having kidney disease, a longer course of antibiotics along with additional medications is usually necessary.

How do I Prevent my dog from getting Lyme Disease?

Tick control is the first and most important step for dog owners wishing to protect their dog from Lyme disease and other tick born diseases. Combine this with regularly checking your dog daily for ticks and removing them as soon as possible.

Products that prevent ticks such as monthly parasite preventatives (e.g., Frontline Plus, Revolution, K9 Advantix or tick collars (e.g., Preventic) are highly recommended.

Isn't their a Vaccine for Lyme Disease in Dogs?

Vaccination against Lyme disease is something that should be discussed with your veterinarian. There are differing views on whether routine vaccination against Lyme disease is useful, and at this time, many veterinary experts to not recommend it.

However, vaccination before exposure can help prevent dogs from getting Lyme disease and also prevent them from becoming a carrier of the the bacteria. For more information on the pros and cons of vaccination, read this helpful brochure from the American Veterinary Medicine Association .

real life "Ace Ventura".

A quick internet search reveals there are dozens of real life Pet Detectives in the greater Los Angeles area alone.

In January, Hollywood actress Sandra Bullock and her husband hired a pet detective to find their missing pet bull dog Cinnabun.(Cinnabun was found, three weeks after she went missing.)

The trend is not just in the US.
According to Ms Jefferies, her agency has helped find over 26,000 dogs,
cats and birds and even reptiles and she claims an 85% success rate for
dogs and cats, and a 40% success rate for birds.

Now there is a job that the career councilors at school never told me about.

I got a chuckle from the recent media reports about a survey from the American Kennel Council about
dogs in American culture (read our blog post here). One of the things
that made me laugh was that the most popular dogs in art award went to
"Dogs Playing Poker" (an old favourite of mine - who would not want
this in the pool room")!
Not only did I find that these great dog paintings have their own wikipedia entry but there is even an entire website devoted to them (called, maybe not surprisingly, "DogsPlayingPoker.org"). Not just that, there is even a video game called Dogs Playing Poker!!!.

The paintings themselves were done by American artist
Cassius Coolidge (C.C. Coolidge) and were commissioned in 1903 by a
Tobacco company to advertise cigars.

The titles in the "Dogs Playing Poker" series proper are:

Post Mortem

Sitting up with a Sick Friend

Stranger in Camp

Waterloo

The original series was joined in 1910 by a similar painting by Coolidge called Looks Like Four of a Kind.

On February 15, 2005, the originals of "A Bold Bluff" and "Waterloo"
were auctioned as a pair to an undisclosed buyer for US$590,000!

I am so glad I took the few minutes to do the google search to learn more about the Dog Playing Poker series. I learned so much (honest Dr Mark, it is work!). What did we do before the internet was invented?

Lots of people like "lists" (I know I do). Lists of top 10 holiday
spots, top 10 fastest cars, top 10 best songs, top 10 baby names - many
of us just can't help ourselves from stopping and taking a look at a
good list.

Sure, we all know that often the lists are subjective, and
don't really mean a great deal, but we humans like order in our lives,
and lists help us keep things in order.

Recently, the
American Kennel Club ( the AKC) released the "Top 10 Most Popular
Breeds in the USA 2009". According to the AKC's records, these are
the top 10 most popular dog breeds last year:

1. Labrador Retriever
2. German Shepherd Dog
3. Yorkshire Terrier
4. Golden Retriever
5. Beagle
6. Boxer
7. Bulldog
8. Dachshund
9. Poodle
10. Shih Tzu
To those of us that keep track of these
sorts of lists, it comes as no surprise that Labrador's come first
again! They are a very popular dog, and indeed I had one myself as a
kid. They've been "top dog" for the last 20 years in the US.

The AKC have also released some interesting statistics about dog breeds in various US Cities. For example, did you know?:

Labradors are in fact slowly losing ground in
some US Cities - The German
Shepherd ranked first in Columbus, Detroit, Honolulu, Memphis, Miami
Providence and West Palm Beach; the Yorkshire Terrier triumphed in
Oakland, Tampa, NYC, and Philadelphia; the Bulldog rose to the top in
L.A.; and the Bull Terrier was a favorite in Newark, NJ.

Californian's love their Bulldogs - including some celebrity owners such
as Adam Sandler, Kelly Osborne and John Legend. The breed reached the
top spot in Los Angeles, the only city where it currently reigns as
number one. In San Diego it came in the 2nd spot.

Providence
is the only U.S. city where the Labrador Retriever does not factor into
the Top 5. Despite ranking second in 2008, the breed dropped off the
list, making room for the German Shepherd in first place, along with
the Yorkshire Terrier, Golden Retriever, Boxer and Poodle.

Unusual
breeds on local top five lists include the Bull Terrier (1st in
Newark), the Mastiff (4th in Des Moines), the Miniature Pinscher and
Shetland Sheepdog (3rd and 5th, respectively, in Richmond) and the
Chihuahua (3rd in Honolulu).

One quarter of young people would rather spend Valentine's Day with their pet than their partner, according to a recent study by Reuters.

The study surveyed 24,000 people in 23 countries, and found that our love for our pets is a worldwide phenomena, although the French were least likely to choose a furry friend over a human, with only 10% of French respondents taking that option. Over 27% of Americans chose their pet!

Men and women were equally split in their love for their animals - apparently a night on the couch cuddled to our kitten or dog beats date night for both partners! (Takeout food and a nice glass of wine makes the couch a winner every time!)
Younger people were more likely to choose their pet - whilst 25% of
people aged under 35 chose their dog or cat, only 14% of those aged 55
and over made the same choice.

And another study (by Purina) shows that a quarter of us say "I love
you" at least once a day to our pets - the same percentage that says "I
love you" once a day to a spouse or significant other. The study
doesn't show if it is the same people declaring love to dog and
husband!!

So.....

Tell us why you would rather spend Valentine's Day with your pet!

Well, according to a survey conducted by the American Kennel Club (AKC), it's good ol' Snoopy!

The

year, brings together dogs from diverse backgrounds for a look at how
dogs have been woven into every aspect of American culture from film and literature to sports and art.

Here are some of the survey results:

Top 10 Dogs in Pop Culture:

A press release from the AKC identified certain results that it classed as "surprising" including:

Major Upsets -
Pound Puppy toys (No. 5) and "Dogs Playing Poker" (No. 6) received more
votes than old-time favorites Toto from the Wizard of Oz (No. 24),
Benji (No. 27), and Rin Tin Tin (No. 46).

Political Dogs - Bo Obama captured the spotlight
earlier this year but landed in the 42nd spot, yet still received more
votes than Bill Clinton's Buddy (No. 44), FDR's Scottish Terrier Fala
(No. 55) and even Richard Nixon's Cocker Spaniel Checkers(No. 65).

Dogs Bark to a Different Tune - Patti Page's 1953 song
"How Much is That Doggie in the Window" came in at No. 7, while "Who
Let the Dogs Out" (No. 9) by the Baha Men outranked Elvis' Hound Dog
(No. 22).

Newcomers Beat the Classics - Newcomer Brian Griffin,
from the TV show Family Guy, landed in the top 10 (No. 10) while more
classic animated dogs such as Huckleberry Hound (No. 38) and Underdog
(No. 53) fell deeper down the list.

AKC experts created the initial list of pop culture dogs but
then the results where determined by public survye conducted online
from September 15 through December 14. In total, nearly 76,000 people
voted.
